Technology in the High School Classroom HomeThis is a featured page

Traditional styles of teaching are now obsolete. Today with the techonology explosion that's presently happening all over the world, classroom education has also come a long way and many schools, colleges, and universities are increasingly integrating more technology into everyday classrooms to help the learning process.

In this day and age of mobile phones, ipods, podcasts, web sites, and blackberries, the way we train and teach has to be able keep up by incorporating computers and the use of technology into everyday lesson plans and activities. The key intent in integrating technology in school classrooms is to construct lesson plans that students find attractive, facilitate quick learning, and energize their involvement and curiosity of a particular lesson or subject.

Using Computer

Present some kind of computer based teaching into your class, and research states that your students will learn more. They have a higher information retention rate and take less time to progress through lessons. Making use of the internet for researching can be effective. Most students are on the internet every day browing websites and searching for things that interest them. As long as you show your students the correct way to search and verify references, the internet can be a key classroom resource that will allow students to discover information and answers on their own.

Using Multimedia

Multimedia and presentation software gives instructors and educators the platform to produce lessons that address the needs of both auditory and visual learners. Almost all computers have some kind of multimedia program installed. You can allow students to take advantage of these programs to create projects and demonstrations that contain both visual aids and text.
Using multimedia also allows for a change from the everyday chalkboard and overhead projector routine. You can increase student involvement, interest, and enjoyment of your lesson and the content being taught.

Interactive Multimedia Ebooks

Ebooks are electronic copies of books that be downloaded to your computer and read online. Many ebooks include video and audio in addition to images and text making them more appealing to students that the normal textbook. For example, imagine you a middle school biology teacher and you need an idea for a project for your students. Students love to use technology to create things. You can have them create their own ebooks. Have them research a topic online, download a few ebooks for example and reference, then create their own using images, video, audio, and text if possible.

Movies and Videos

Another idea for a fun project is to have students create videos or mini movies as projects. Most students have these capabilities built into their phone, but if not your school should have a video camera for you to use. Have them create 5-15 minute prestations or videos on a topic of your choice.

You may also want to try out classroom podcasts, blogs, or interactive class websites.

Learning is a lifetime process and the way we teach and educate should constantly be evaluated and updated to meet the needs and learning styles of our current students. My making use of various forms of technology, you can do everything you can to make sure every student has an equal chance to learn and retain knowledge.
